THE PARROT and THE DUNG BEETLE / An Animal Dialogue

“Hey, dung beetle!”

The dung beetle somersaulted into a ditch while he was busy rolling dung into a big round ball he wanted to bury for his family.

“What on earth is going on? Who’s talking to me?”

“Look up into the tree! It’s me, the parrot. I have a message for you.”

The dung beetle’s thoughts were racing. „Oh my.. I have to get away otherwise I end up in his stomach. The parrot looks so incredibly huge.“ He stopped doing what he was doing and tried to run away.

“Stop! I won’t eat you!”

“What’s your message?”

“I am losing my tree soon.”

“What’s it got to do with me?”

Trying to run for cover he bumped into another dung beetle which was in his way.

That one wasn’t amused at all and ended up on his back. „Hey! Watch out, buddy!“

„I don’t have time. The dung is fresh and I’ve got work to do!“

“This is what I mean!” the parrot replied.

“You lose your food and brood balls because of the poaching of elephants and rhinos, and I lose my tree because of irresponsible logging by multinational companies.”

For the first time in a long time the dung beetle held in and pondered over the parrot’s words.

“How do you know?”

“Bushmen were sitting under my tree and talked about it!”

“Parrot, tell me, what can we do?”

“We animals have to stick together and do whatever we can to stop our planet from being exploited. We need help from humans, though.”

“Absolutely!”

“By the way, you look beautiful in your metallic green coat, dung beetle.”

“Oh, thank you. Your colourful feathers look also marvelous.”

Then an elephant walked past and relieved himself. The smell of the fresh dung attracted the dung beetle’s attention again.

“Let’s concentrate on the positive side of life and carry on working,” he proposed.

“Yep, life is too short to dwell on negativity. You made my day, dung beetle.”

Then he flew away and disappeared into the distance.
